Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight," and the nickname is well earned. It damages the optic nerve slowly and painlessly, usually without any early warning, and by the time most people notice a problem, some vision has already been permanently lost. That is exactly why regular eye pressure checks matter so much.
What glaucoma actually does
The optic nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain. In most forms of glaucoma, raised pressure inside the eye gradually damages the delicate fibres of this nerve. The loss starts in the peripheral (side) vision, which the brain fills in so seamlessly that it goes unnoticed for years. Left untreated, the damage advances inward until it threatens central vision — and unlike a cataract, vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored.
Why screening is the key
Because there are no symptoms to alert you, glaucoma is typically found only when someone has their eyes examined for another reason — or through deliberate screening. A routine check is quick and completely painless, and includes:
- Tonometry — a measurement of the pressure inside the eye.
- Optic nerve assessment — examining the nerve head for early signs of damage.
- Visual field testing and OCT scans where needed, to map any loss and track it over time.
Detected early, glaucoma is very manageable. Simple daily eye drops, and in some cases laser or surgery, can lower the pressure and halt further damage — protecting the sight you still have.
Who should be checked, and how often
Everyone benefits from a periodic eye examination, but you should be especially vigilant if you:
- Are over 40 years of age
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Are diabetic, highly short-sighted, or on long-term steroids
- Have had an eye injury in the past
For most adults an eye pressure and optic nerve check every one to two years is sensible; those at higher risk may need it more often.
Protect your sight today
Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can almost always be controlled when caught in time. A few minutes for a pressure check every year is a small price for a lifetime of clear vision. If you are due for a check — or have any of the risk factors above — book an assessment with Vista Eye Care and give your eyes the head start they deserve.
