The cornea is the clear, outermost layer of the human eye. Technically, the cornea is made up of five delicate membranes organised one below the other. It plays a major role in your vision — its transparency and curved shape helps refract light from an object so it falls at the correct spot on the retina, enabling sharpness of vision. The cornea also acts as a protective layer, preventing dust, dirt and germs from entering the eye.

Corneal Problems — What Could Go Wrong?

The corneal surface and its structure are extremely delicate. Any injury or infection of the cornea can cause damage that leads to loss of corneal transparency, disrupting normal vision. Common issues affecting the cornea include corneal ulcers, keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) and keratoconus (thinning of the cornea), besides allergies, infections such as herpes, and corneal abrasions caused by external injuries. Common symptoms include:

Common Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Reduced vision
  • Inability to open eyes in bright light
  • Redness
  • Watering
  • Swelling of the eyelid

Corneal Treatment — What Are the Options?

Corneal diseases require a multi-modality approach to medicine that helps reduce symptoms and stabilise the condition. These diseases often take a fairly long course of treatment with frequent follow-ups — the most important factor for early healing and recovery is the patient's compliance in using medications exactly as directed. In cases of corneal infection, a small amount of superficial corneal tissue is removed (scraping) and evaluated to identify the type of infection and the organism causing it — specific medication is then prescribed to help speed recovery. Vista Eye Care is among the best clinics for Corneal Infection treatment in Delhi.
